Learn about the NSRP ShipScan project involving ShipConstructor and 3D remote scanning from DotProduct.

At the International Workboat Show in New Orleans (Nov. 29 – Dec. 1, 2017), SSI will be showcasing a project regarding 3D remote scanning. The project, funded by the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP), is called “ShipsScan”. This project aims to improve the current handheld 3D scanning process in shipbuilding and to document workflows that can be integrated easily and inexpensively into business and engineering processes.

Background of the Project

3D remote scanning technology has been available for many years and has seen some limited adoption from larger yards. However, historically, the technology has been expensive to procure and operate. The hardware was large and too unwieldly to see broader adoption, and often required stationary equipment, long scan times and specially trained personnel to operate.

Now, there is new remote scanning technology that trades the sub-millimeter accuracy of legacy scan systems for speed, convenience, and ease of use. The costs have come down by an order of magnitude which makes it affordable for shipyards and design agents of any size to consider implementing 3D remote scanning as part of their business processes.

The ShipScan project will develop and document best practices in how to implement this technology. Under the project team leadership of Ship Architects, Inc(Workboat Booth 1850), SSI will be working with DotProduct, a company that makes portable scanners and software, plus Austal USA (Booth 3154) BAE Southeast Shipyards (Booth 3015), and Bollinger Shipyards (Booth 1827).

Usefulness to ShipConstructor Users

A key benefit of using 3D remote scanning technology is that it provides an efficient way to validate a digital twin modeled in SSI’s ShipConstructor software.

Tom Greaves, Chief Marketing Officer of DotProduct will be in the SSI booth to demonstrate his company’s portable handheld “tablet” laser scanner.

SSI USA staff Patrick Roberts, Darren Guillory, Jeanie Shumock and Jennifer Walley will be on hand to talk more about the NSRP project and how SSI’s ShipConstructor and EnterprisePlatform software are ideal for promoting efficiency and effectiveness throughout the shipbuilding process.
