Release Information - ShipConstructor 2014 R2.1

Overview

ShipConstructor 2014 R2.1 has been specifically designed to rapidly respond to emerging trends in ship design and engineering as identified by SSI’s innovative new Client Council program. The initial Client Council consisted of Vripack, Peters Shipyards, Royal Huisman, Vera Navis, Marine Technologies Ltd., BMT Nigel Gee, Mustang Marine, Skipskompetanse, and Pendennis. The companies involved in the this Client Council suggested several ways to enhance their productivity such as a new split plate command, a new fillet cut type for stiffener endcuts, increased pipe and HVAC connection tolerance, as well as the ability to create MarineDrafting views in other types of drawings. These features have now been incorporated into ShipConstructor 2014 R2.1.

New Split Plate Command

An emerging trend is that ShipConstructor software is being used earlier in the design process and clients want to reuse the information at later stages in order to avoid rework and prevent errors. Therefore, ShipConstructor 2014 R2.1 now has the ability to create full panel parts and then break them into separate parts at a later stage. This allows, for example, a large plate panel to be modeled as a single plate part which could then be 100% detailed including all the datum lines, attached stiffeners, other marklines, and cutouts etc. Once the final arrangement has been completed, and just before nesting, the user can then add the most efficient seams.

ShipConstructor-2014-R2-1-Image2

1. Create lines that represent seams across an existing plate part.
2. Choose the command (SCPLATESPLIT) or SC Structure > Plate > Split Plate or Structure tab > Plates panel > Split Plate.
3. Select the plate part.
4. Select the seam curves.
5. The first split part created from the current piecemark location is shown. If the part has identicals/mirrors then you are prompted to keep the break/keep relationships.
6. Pick the next part's piecemark location.
7. A plate part is created and shown.
8. The process of selecting a piecemark and showing a plate part is looped until you escape or press ENTER. The process will stop automatically when you have created all the sub parts.
The command will detect when you try to create the same part twice and prevent it.

The new plate parts will have the same properties as the original part:

• Stock
• Throw
• Mark side
• Assemblies
• Finishes
• UDAs
• Weld shrinkage
• Datum lines
• Orientation icon display

Properties that are copied:

• Cutouts are placed on parts they touch
• Marklines and Mark Text are placed on the parts they lie on.
• Corner treatments are copied to new parts where the construction lines, the corner treatment are associated with, exist on the split part.
• Dynamic marking blocks are associated with the plate they are positioned on. If the dynamic marking block spans multiple parts then it will be removed.

Properties that are removed:

• Plate Green is removed from all parts.
• Flanges are removed from all parts.
• Bevel standards are removed from all parts.

Other Behavior:

• New part names will use the active naming convention and not the naming convention of the original part.
• Linked parts (stiffeners, faceplates, penetrations) are re-associated to the new plates they should be linked to.
• If the source plate part has identical or mirror parts, the new split parts will also create the identical and mirrors.

New Fillet Cut type for Stiffener Endcuts

ShipConstructor 2014 R2.1 has added a new Fillet cut to the list of available cuts for profile endcuts in the Endcut Catalog.

 ShipConstructor-2014-R2-1-Image3

1. The fillet shape is defined by fillet radius, an outer radius, start angle, end angle that represent a partial doughnut shape.
2. The origin of the shape is the intersection of the fillet tangent vectors (typically the corner that will be filleted).
3. The fillet angles are the angles defined as the counter-clockwise angle from along the stiffener's length to the tangent of the fillet circle.
4. Enclosed angles must be greater than 15 degrees.

ShipConstructor-2014-R2-1-Image3

Start angle and end angle are added to Radius cut to now permit pie shaped cuts.

ShipConstructor-2014-R2-1-Image3b

New Pipe and HVAC connection tolerance

There are many scenarios where tight tolerances are not always required in a distributed system (e.g. when dealing with large pipes). Therefore, ShipConstructor 2014 R2.1 now allows for a greater tolerance in connecting pipe and HVAC parts when the ends do not line up exactly.

ShipConstructor-2014-R2-1-Image4

ShipConstructor has added two new project settings to control the connection tolerance: Pipe / Offset Fabrication Tolerance, and HVAC / Offset Fabrication Tolerance. Warning: If the Offset Fabrication Tolerance is reduced after connections are created, the connections will be removed if the transverse distance between the parts is larger than the tolerance.

Ability to Create MarineDrafting Views in Other Types of Production Drawings

In a world of 3D design, 2D drawings are still widely utilized in many scenarios so in the initial release of ShipConstructor 2014, SSI launched a new product called MarineDrafting which allows the creation of 2D DWG based drawings directly from the 3D model. ShipConstructor 2014 R2.1 enhances the MarineDrafting functionality and introduces new workflow options by now allowing 2D MarineDrafting views directly from assembly drawings, support construction drawings, or any type of arrangement drawing.

ShipConstructor-2014-R2-1-Image5b

ShipConstructor now allows MarineDrafting views to be used in assembly and arrangement drawings.

MarineDrafting views can now be created in the same drawings as an isometric assembly drawing.

• This gives users the freedom to easily create a single layout with both a MarineDrafting 2D view and an isometric view.
• The MarineDrafting settings can be setup in the template drawings or set up in production drawings themselves.

The MarineDrafting commands require a MarineDrafting license.

System Requirements

SSI has maintained the system requirements for ShipConstructor 2014 R2.1 so that they are the same as the prior release, ShipConstructor 2014. This allows clients who were previously using the latest version of the software to upgrade to ShipConstructor 2014 R2.1 without changes to their IT infrastructure.

Notable Changes

Redesigned User Experience

UE-Screenshot

ShipConstructor 2014 brings a modernized user experience to ShipConstructor that improves the discovery of features and intuitively guides users in accomplishing tasks. These changes are based upon SSI’s analysis of current best practices for enhanced productivity.

Great care has been taken to improve the logical groupings of tools and commands in ribbons and windows so as to enable the most efficient workflow. At the same time, consistent visual metaphors and overlays have also been used to increase the intuitiveness of the new user interface.

Attention has been paid to how information is presented to optimize efficiency. Icons and toolbars are displayed in a left to right pattern that follows the natural chronology of modern workflow. Additionally, the differing size of various icons reflects SSI’s analysis of the relative usage of particular functions.

The revitalization of the software’s look and feel has been comprehensive. There are over 400 icons that have been completely redesigned to more accurately indicate what the tool or command is intended for. Each icon has also been created with different size versions that allow each icon to maintain a crisp appearance in any situation. These changes allow the icons to be clearly recognized and understood which can play a critical role in the productivity of users who are new to the software. The new iconography can be found in the ribbons and in all of the most commonly used windows, including the navigator, licensing dialog, product hierarchy, and system manager.

Furthermore, in keeping with the revamp of SSI’s corporate branding, the 3D Viewpoint interface has been modernized and there is a new splash screen and installer displaying recent examples of innovative projects built using SSI software. The enhanced user experience available in ShipConstructor 2014 is just one part of SSI’s recent re-launch initiative. A key objective of this initiative has been to provide the highest quality experience of the SSI brand every time a client interacts with the company, its products and services.

Release Information - ShipConstructor 2014 R2

Overview

ShipConstructor 2014 R2 is focused on streamlining workflow for users and enhancing the user experience. This has been accomplished by collecting feedback from clients in all markets and industries, then implementing hundreds of suggestions that boost efficiency, quality and stability. In addition to these user-driven enhancements, ShipConstructor 2014 R2 adds new capabilities for streamlining penetration workflows and managing penetrations in a multi-disciplinary environment. ShipConstructor 2014 R2 also introduces major enhancements to the WeldManagment product which now enables complete 3D weld management. This means that for the first time ever, engineering and production can be seamlessly linked to efficiently and effectively administer the entire welding process.

User Experience

There are 265 user driven enhancements included in this release which continues to improve ShipConstructor's very intuitive and familiar User Experience (UX). These enhancements have reduced the number of clicks to complete a specific action. The UX improvements also continue to align ShipConstructor’s workflow to the evolving requirements of our clients.

These improvements allow users to accomplish tasks easier with more intuitive options. They also increase accuracy by providing relevant information during an operation. Additionally, new features and capabilities have been introduced which support new and improved workflows. The breadth of these improvements will guarantee that every ShipConstructor user will notice and appreciate this release.

Weld Management

Weld-Management-2014R2

Management of welds through the lifecycle of the project can be a laborious task and can account for a significant amount of time and resources. Therefore, through extensive research and customer feedback, SSI has extended and significantly improved the WeldManagement product securing its position as the most advanced and user friendly weld management application on the market.

Pure 3D experience

3D-Experience-2014R2

The entire lifecycle of welds from automatic generation of their 3D path to verifying the welds on the shop floor can now all be visualized in 3D using accurate and up-to-date information. This significantly reduces the amount of time required and lessens human errors. To actualize this benefit, there are several visualization modes for welds which ensure that the user can represent the welds in the form which is most appropriate for them to accomplish their task.

Documentation

Documentation-2014R2

ShipConstructor 2014 R2 allows users to document welds in traditional ways such as with symbolic representations on workshop or assembly DWGs, or alternatively, by having welds and their attributes exported to a spreadsheet. An advantage of using ShipConstructor is that these types of output are generated from the 3D model and that they remain associatively linked. More importantly, ShipConstructor 2014 R2 also adds new modern 3D workflows which better communicate information between engineering and the shop floor than the traditional methods such as printed spreadsheets.

Connecting engineering and production

Additional features were added to WeldManagement to better facilitate a cohesive exchange of information between the engineering and production teams without introducing any disruption or requiring additional work by either group. This is accomplished by accessing the weld information contained in the Marine Information Model (MIM) via new and improved methods which allow users to retrieve information in various task specific layouts. This is important because a weld engineer requires specific tools and a visual representation of a weld which differ from the needs of a weld inspector. Therefore, with ShipConstructor 2014 R2 WeldManagement, only the information needed is collected and the user interaction with the data is optimized for the task to be accomplished.

Multi-Disciplinary distributed environment

One of the major benefits of ShipConstructor is the unified environment for creating and managing penetrations in a distributed environment. In this release, SSI extended the functionality of penetrations on multi-site projects by eliminating most restrictions. This increased flexibility now allows each site to create, modify and delete penetrations and have all changes integrated together in a predictable manner.

Streamlined Penetration workflow

Penetrations by definition are the intersection of two disciplines and because of this there are no “standard” workflows. Some organization requires a several stage penetration approval process while others just require one. ShipConstructor 2014 R2 introduces streamlined approval workflows to remove unnecessary steps that were previously required by users to complete the approval process of a penetration. There are also numerous User Experience (UX) improvements and additional features which allow a user to more efficiently create and manage penetrations. These include features such as the ability to create multiple penetrations simultaneously from one command as well as support for object snaps (Osnaps) on pending penetration cut-outs.

System Requirements

SSI has maintained the system requirements for ShipConstructor 2014 R2 so that they are the same as the prior release, ShipConstructor 2014. This allows clients who were previously using the latest version of the software to upgrade to ShipConstructor 2014 R2 without changes to their IT infrastructure.

New Features in ShipConstructor 2013 R2

SSI-Electrical-1

The ShipConstructor 2013 R2 release from SSI offers significant enhancements to its Electrical Product. ShipConstructor now has the ability to automatically route cables between junction points within a 3D environment shared by the rest of the shipbuilding engineering team, thereby reducing interferences and
promoting concurrent engineering.

Overview

SSI-Electrical-2

Electrical is a 3D modeling and production system for wireways, cable trays, supports, cables and transits. It features an associative 3D model connecting allocated space to individual wireways, cable trays, supports and subsequent cables.  Associative production documentation can be generated from the model including cable pull schedules and reports. The cables within the model are automatically routed within the ShipConstructor environment according to EMC ratings, minimum bend radius and more.

Benefits

Detect issues early
Electrical is often one of the last disciplines to be considered and one of the most difficult to allocate space for. Space can be allocated early in the design process using Space Allocations which can be used in all interference checking against structure and other systems. These space allocations will then be used as the foundation for electrical wireways and cable supports ensuring that late issues should not arise.

Effective change
Cables, wireways, cable supports and space allocations within the 3D model are associatively connected. As changes are made to space allocations, wireways, and cable lengths are automatically updated. This level of associativity in the 3D Electrical model reduces the amount of manual work, and resulting errors, that must be performed when change is required.

Accurate cable lengths
Cables are created and automatically routed in 3D resulting in more accurate cable lengths and installation information in cable pull sheets and reports. This leads to lower material handling costs and less wasted cable as it is pulled through the ship.

Features:

  • Allocate space early in the process

  • Define a master equipment list

  • Model electrical wireways

  • Model standard cable supports and trays

  • Define EMC zones

  • Automatically route cables

  • Parametrically update wireways and cables as systems change

  • Create cable pull schedules and electrical arrangements
