Release Information - ShipConstructor 2016 R2

It’s been called “Getting in the Groove”, “Finding Flow”, or “Getting Wired In”. What these terms describe is a state of total focus on the task at hand with nothing to disrupt or distract you from accomplishing your goal. This state of optimum productivity is promoted by the new features found in the latest release of SSI’s shipbuilding CAD/CAM software, ShipConstructor 2016 R2 along with SSI’s information sharing tool, EnterprisePlatform.

Smoother Systems Routing via Continuation Grip Points

ShipConstructor 2016 R2 now lets you stay focused on systems modelling by the creation of a feature called “Continuation Grip Points.” Simply click the grip point at an open end of a pipe or HVAC part and you can immediately continue routing a bent part off the currently selected element.

There is no need to continually run a command and then interact with a menu to define attributes each time a new part is added because with Continuation Grip Points, the routed part automatically acquires the proper size, stock definition and system-branch assignment.

This feature helps you stay focused on the main task at hand, eliminates repetitive work, increases efficiency and reduces the likelihood of errors. Attributes simply need to be set once and from then on, you can focus on routing the system

Clarity: Linking UDA Editing with Parts in Drawings & Product Hierarchies

Available in Subscription Advantage Pack

Now you can visualize (and therefore instantly understand) what user defined attributes (UDAs) are associated with specific parts in drawings because now the UDA Editor dialog is connected to drawings. At the same time, you can see where the parts fit within the currently selected Product Hierarchy because Product Hierarchies are also linked to drawings. Combining these three  (Drawing, Product Hierarchy, and UDA Editor) on the same screen, leads to greater clarity and opens up possibilities that have not existed before.

For example, one use case is that it is now possible to find and select a subset of parts in a drawing based on UDA values assigned to those parts. Simultaneously, these parts would be highlighted in the Product Hierarchy tree which gives you the ability to perform operations on them in the Hierarchy Tree.

Enhanced Benefit
A key benefit is that there is no need to reload multiple model drawings and access parts individually. This is because the UDA editor supports group operations which means you can conveniently modify multiple records at once, thereby saving you time.  Once the "SAVE" button is hit, all changes are saved directly into the project database and are applied to all affected part objects.

Set it once: Weld Standards Added to Naming Conventions

ShipConstructor-Weld-Standards

Available in Subscription Advantage Pack

SSI continues to enhance its WeldManagement product. In several markets weld standards are required as part of each weld name to aid with identification and management. Therefore, with ShipConstructor 2016 R2, weld standards can now be set up as part of weld naming conventions. A key point to note is that this feature just needs to be selected once and from then on, the weld standard is automatically added to a weld name. There is no need for modelers to repeatedly and manually identify weld standards.

Streamlined Data Transfer from 3D Model to Pre-Formatted Excel Documents

Since its launch last year, ShipConstructor users have increasingly been using SSI’s EnterprisePlatform PublisherLT product to find, package and collect ShipConstructor model data for usage in third-party applications.

Now, this product is even more powerful. PublisherLT can now export data from the 3D model and write it into pre-formatted Microsoft Excel documents. This saves so much time because charts, tables, pivot tables, fonts, formulas etc. do not have to be recreated each time. If you need Engineering information from the ShipConstructor model for usage in a report or for analysis, you can now easily (and repeatedly) find and quickly utilize the information you need.

ShipConstructor 2016 R2 lets you focus on the task at hand, reduces repetitive manual rework (thereby increasing quality), and enables you to just get your job done.

Enhanced Risk Management: Configure Multiple License Servers
ShipConstructor 2016 R2 now provides licencing that gives you the ability to configure multiple license servers (e.g., fail over server to improve risk management).

Release Information - ShipConstructor 2016 R1.1

ShipConstructor 2016 R1.1 - Overview

With the release of ShipConstructor 2016 R1.1, SSI provides new advancements for the offshore rig construction market, particularly with regards to weld management. It also contains new features that measurably enhance performance and efficiency.

ShipConstructor 2016 R1.1 is especially geared towards early adopters of ShipConstructor’s latest productivity-enhancing capabilities; the predominant portion of new features are focused on ShipConstructor Subscription Advantage Pack clients

Retrieve Models 10 times faster (Advantage Pack)

Speed comparison

ShipConstructor 2016 R1.1 now offers what early testers have called the “blazingly fast” ability to MLINK Navisworks NWC files utilizing AutoCAD's new feature to attach Coordination Models. The ability to easily bring entire units into ShipConstructor lets users quickly get a visual reference to aid equipment and structural placement. No Navisworks licenses are required; AutoCAD can generate NWC files itself with the free Autodesk Navisworks NWC export utility and Navisworks does not need to be running to utilize Coordination Models. This efficiency promoting feature is available to users of AutoCAD 2016. It is so fast, that compared to traditional MLINKING, it is over ten times faster to load a unit! A related benefit is that once a unit is loaded, display performance has been dramatically increased as well.

Visualize an entire ship model within ShipConstructor

ShipConstructor 2016 Coordination Model

The amount of information that can be loaded via Coordination Models is enormous compared to traditional MLinks; now you can visualize an entire ship model within ShipConstructor. Another notable feature is that Coordination Models are not just for visualization; you can interact with Coordination Models as reference geometry as well.

Weld Enhancements (Advantage Pack)

Weld Manager Palette improvements

SSI-ShipConstructor-2016-Screenshot2

The streamlined palette interface for Weld Manager continues to grow in popularity because of its increased clarity for displaying relevant information and also due to its improved performance over the older Weld Manager Interface. Therefore, SSI has added new capabilities; it is now possible to copy welds added to the Weld Manager palette.

Modifying portions of a weld in Weld Manager Palette

SSI-ShipConstructor-2016-Screenshot3

ShipConstructor’s WeldManagement product lets users efficiently chose which parts are to be welded and generates the appropriate welds while applying company standards. However, in the offshore world (and also in shipbuilding), there are frequently situations where a weld needs to be split in two so that different weld standards can be applied. In other cases, a portion of the contact path needs to be deleted. An example of this would be when I-beams intersect another I-beam. To handle this scenario within SSI’s modernized Weld Manager Palette interface, ShipConstructor 2016 R1.1 now allows the ability to modify or delete portions of a weld.

Welding two sides of the same part

SSI-ShipConstructor-2016-Screenshot4

A feature commonly requested for rig construction applications (though also of benefit to the general shipbuilding community) is the ability to efficiently model the welding of two sides of the same part. A common application of this would be for plates rolled into cylinders or the creation of structural pipes.

UDA Strings for Weld Objects

SSI-ShipConstructor-2016-Screenshot5

Using the WELD UDA Manager, String User Defined Attributes can now be added to weld entities in the Weld Manager Palette and later edited. These UDAs will appear in reports, BOMs and text output. This feature is particularly useful in the rig construction market where tracking and managing welds is critical.

New Structure Part – Customizable Plate Part

ShipConstructor users have told SSI that they want more structure part types to deal with scenarios such as:

  •     Folded-plate tanks

  •     Multi-flange items

  •     Crank girders

To accommodate this desire, ShipConstructor 2016 R1.1 adds more options for modelers by allowing a new structure part. This new part is a generic "custom plate part". It will have all the UDA values set for a plate part and support markings and text and also allow bevels and weld shrinkage. It will be easily editable and allow for numerous custom scenarios, thus extending ShipConstructor's flexibility.

Bevel Standards for Corrugated Plate Parts

Increasingly, shipyards wish to apply bevel standards to corrugated plate parts. ShipConstructor 2016 R1.1 now allows these to be modeled so that the bevels can be efficiently cut by machines, rather than manually which is more costly. Adding bevels in modeling allows this process to be managed properly and enhances communication via visuals. Production becomes more efficient and quality is increased with this new feature in ShipConstructor 2016 R1.1.

SSI-ShipConstructor-2016-Screenshot7

Pipe Modeling Tool Palette

In the Subscription Advantage Pack, ShipConstructor 2016 R1.1 offers a technical preview of an exciting new interface for pipe modeling. SSI introduces the Pipe Modeling Tool palate which introduces a new, more efficient modeling workflow. Now users can set the current system, branch and nominal size from dropdowns and then see all compatible stocks. You simply click on the stock you want to use and then start modeling. This workflow is more efficient because it reduces the number of navigation options needed to model individual pipe parts. The palette consists of a toolbar, current pipe settings and a pipe stock list.

Release Information - ShipConstructor 2016

ShipConstructor 2016 - Overview

SSI’s newly released version of its Autodesk based ShipConstructor CAD/CAM software (ShipConstructor 2016) provides 27 new features and 104 enhancements including important new functionality to easily and intuitively re-use information to save time. See highlights below.

Intelligent Copy / Paste Capability

ShipConstructor users know that a key differentiator of the software is that ShipConstructor parts contain more than just dumb geometry. They contain a wealth of intelligence involving shipbuilding-specific data and attribute information along with associative relationships to the other parts in a ship’s product data model.

Often you need to copy parts or selections of parts from one portion of a project to another. Just copying shapes isn't good enough. To avoid spending a lot of time laboriously redoing a bunch of work, with ShipConstructor 2016, now you can copy/clip and then paste all the associated intelligence as well. And you can do this efficiently with just a few clicks or keystrokes, using intuitive methods standard in other software, e.g. Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V.

To increase accuracy of placement, you can also copy and paste with insertion points which further enhances efficiency.

ShipConstructor 2016 now gives the ability to copy identical selections of parts into new locations such as within the same drawing or to other valid drawing types from the same project. This frequently requested feature is now available and saves time and effort while also reducing errors and increasing quality.

Copy and Paste is now available for Outfitting Parts (HVAC, Equipment, Pipe, Pipe Hangers) along with Space Allocations.

Note that the copy and paste feature is particularly useful when combined with the new multiple document interface capability also released in ShipConstructor 2016 (see below). You can easily copy and paste what you are doing between two different visible screens, thus adding to the intuitiveness and efficiency of SSI’s software.

Intelligent BOM Copy

SSI listens to feedback from its customers. SSI’s Client Council noted that the process of generating production drawings and BOMs (Bills of Materials) can be time consuming. To save time and effort in formatting, ShipConstructor now offers a simple yet powerful means to quickly and easily copy and paste existing BOMs to various drawing types and layouts. This includes the BOM’s filters, formatting and setup while retaining all its relationships with the database.

BOM types supported are: General, spool, cutlist, bending info, corner point, global point, support construction and weld.

The drawing types supported include: Assembly, Arrangement, Output, Spool, MarineDrafting, Support Construction, and production template drawings.

This increased flexibility would be useful, for example, when you want to add a new layout to an existing pipe arrangement drawing. It’s all about saving time by re-using the work you have already done.

More Flexibility: New Part Type: HVAC Flange

SSI strives to incorporate features that match real-world workflows. Our clients have told us that in many cases flanges are fabricated as separate parts and attached to straight ducts in the same manner as pipes. Flanges are made separate from the duct and they are sometimes installed at separate times.

Clients will also appreciate the fact that now HVAC flanges can be included in Bills of Materials and labeled, giving added information to streamline production planning.

Multiple Document Interface

MDI was a feature that was so well received when it was launched in the Subscription Advantage Pack that SSI now has included it within the core ShipConstructor product.

Enabling Multiple Document Interface means that more than one drawing may be open at one time. They are easily accessible in different tabs and thumbnail versions of each drawing’s model view and layout view appear when you hover over a tab.

Tabs are really useful when you want to compare drawings. For example, to help you with modeling, you might want to look at drawings from different disciplines, e.g. Structure and Piping. Or, you might wish to reference closely related parts within the same discipline. You can quickly identify the drawing you want by looking at the thumbnail and then make the full drawing visible with a single click. This feature significantly increases efficiency.

Pro tip: Save often. An advantage of ShipConstructor is that all the drawings are associated back to the underlying product data model. Therefore, you’ll want to save your work in one drawing so that the changes are reflected in the other.

Also, SSI realizes that there are times that you may have hardware or software limitations or are possibly dealing with very large ShipConstructor drawings. Therefore, to enhance performance, ShipConstructor provides a way to, in effect, turn off the MDI option and make it SDI (Single Document Interface). (Technically, this is a hybrid MDI option that restricts the number of ShipConstructor drawings open to one.)

Bevel Standards for Curved Plate Parts

This new feature in ShipConstructor is in high demand industrywide. It allows users to specify a bevel code for the edges of curved plates. This is important because effective management of bevel information is needed to improve communications with production. Therefore, adding bevel standards for curved plate parts allows this process to be managed properly and enhances communication via visuals. Production (welding) is faster, more efficient, and results in higher quality.

License Roaming for Network Licenses

Freedom. That’s what the new license roaming option give you. ShipConstructor 2016 now gives you the ability to run ShipConstructor when not connected to the license server. Say you want to work on ShipConstructor on a laptop at home, or at a different office, potentially a client’s or a subcontractor’s. Perhaps you want to have people keep working while doing some work on the license server. You can simply check out licenses and check them back in when you connect back to the network license server. The new license roaming functionality gives all the freedom of the old USB hardware locks with the added security of a software based licensing system.

Licensing Documentation

SSI has worked hard at producing more comprehensive licensing documentation. The new Licensing Manual in ShipConstructor 2016 give detailed information regarding installing and updating licenses, license administration, as well as explanations regarding how to use SSI software licensing with ShipConstructor 2014 and earlier versions.

Keeping Up-to-Date with Current Editions
