The shipbuilding industry is entering a critical phase of digital transformation, one where the value of vessel data extends far beyond design and construction, shaping how ships are sustained, upgraded and operated over decades of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new collaborative initiative supported by Canada\u2019s Ocean Supercluster (OSC)<\/a> is helping move that vision into practice. The Digital Ship\u00ae Vessel Sustainment Project, led by Genoa Design International, is developing an advanced digital platform designed to improve how vessels are maintained, supported and managed throughout their operational lifecycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By connecting shipbuilding expertise with modern digital technologies, the project is focused on improving lifecycle efficiency, strengthening data continuity and enabling more informed decision-making across complex marine programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new approach to vessel lifecycle management<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While much of the industry\u2019s focus has traditionally centered on design and construction, the majority of a vessel\u2019s cost, risk and operational complexity occurs after delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This phase, commonly referred to as In-Service Support (ISS), includes maintenance, refits, upgrades and day-to-day operational planning. For naval programs and large commercial fleets, ISS can span decades, requiring precise configuration control and reliable access to engineering and asset data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In practice, however, that data is often fragmented across systems, contractors and lifecycle phases. This creates challenges in maintaining a single source of truth, increasing the risk of rework, delays and inefficiencies during sustainment activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Digital Ship Vessel Sustainment Project<\/a> aims to address this gap by developing a digital platform that connects lifecycle data and makes it accessible, usable and actionable for the teams responsible for supporting vessels in operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is valued at $2.4 million, with Canada\u2019s Ocean Supercluster contributing $815,000 and the remainder funded by project partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As shared with the broader ocean innovation community, including at the Oceans Advance Innovation Waves conference, the project reflects a growing industry priority: turning digital shipbuilding data into long-term operational value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Genoa Design International, the project represents a natural extension of its leadership in digital ship design and 3D modelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With more than 30 years of experience and over 130 vessel design projects delivered, Genoa has played a key role in supporting naval and coast guard programs across Canada and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this initiative, Genoa is expanding its focus beyond design delivery, helping address how ship data is structured, managed and leveraged across the full lifecycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shift reflects a broader industry need: ensuring that digital ship models and engineering data are not only created efficiently, but also maintained and reused throughout sustainment, modernization and lifecycle planning activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resulting platform has the potential to improve downstream outcomes while also informing upstream processes such as design decisions, construction planning and lifecycle cost management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Digital Ship Vessel Sustainment Project reflects a broader shift toward more integrated, collaborative shipbuilding ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delivering and sustaining modern vessels requires coordination across a wide network of stakeholders, including designers, shipyards, system integrators, owners and operators. Digital platforms are increasingly playing a central role in connecting these groups, enabling shared visibility into vessel data and supporting more coordinated execution across lifecycle phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach is further strengthened by the long-standing relationship between Genoa Design International and SSI, two Canadian companies with deep roots in the marine sector and a shared passion for innovation. As part of the initiative, SSI is supporting the development of the digital platform, contributing its experience in shipbuilding data environments, product model management and digital engineering workflows. SSI\u2019s solutions enable teams to manage complex vessel models, maintain configuration control and ensure that engineering data remains consistent and accessible across systems and lifecycle stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
