Client News
OpenArchitecture

One of the key features of SSI’s ShipConstructor software is that it is built on an open architecture platform. This means that all of the underlying data is easily accessible. Genoa Design International is leveraging that openness to enhance the quality of its deliverables to its clients and increase productivity.

About Genoa Design

Genoa Design International is a marine production design company that provides production lofting, detail design and 3D modelling services to shipbuilding and offshore industries around the world.

Recent projects that Genoa has been involved in include production design for the Canadian’ Coast Guard’s Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel being built at Vancouver Shipyard, 3 Washington State Ferries built by Vigor Industrial, and Military Offshore Support Vessels built at Gulf Island Marine Fabricators for the Iraqi Navy.

Excel Queries Enhance Quality

Genoa is renowned for the quality of the work packages that it provides to shipyards so it is always interested in ways to enhance and streamline its quality control processes. This is in keeping with the fact that Genoa is an industry pioneer in applying Lean Manufacturing principles to its business. Genoa prides itself on reducing waste and focusing on end-value to clients.

With that goal in mind, Genoa is accomplishing significant improvements by now linking Microsoft Excel to the live data in ShipConstructor. This allows Genoa to make better decisions using always up-to-date information. By creating a live link to the ShipConstructor Marine Information Model (MIM), Genoa is now able to apply the power of Excel to quickly and clearly identify any issues with their projects. For instance, one application is that when clients specify that parts be named via a specific naming convention, it is now far easier for Genoa to check this by running an Excel query, rather than by using a labor intensive system of manual checks. The new process therefore leads to higher quality output with significantly less effort.

SCDN: ShipConstructor Development Network

Building the custom reports that Genoa desired has involved collaboration with SSI and this support is a benefit of Genoa being part of the ShipConstructor Development Network. Genoa will further be leveraging the ShipConstructor data to create custom features related to how to view drawings.

For information on how to improve the quality of your output and increase productivity you are encouraged to become a member of the ShipConstructor Development Network.
