Complex Designs

SSI client Skipskompetanse in Norway is using ShipConstructor software to produce complex designs for the fish farming industry.

World-Leading Company

Within this niche market, Skipskompetanse has established itself as the world-leader. By designing the Ro Master in 2007, the company’s Managing Director Per Jørgen Silden was the first to create a design that crossed the 2000 cubic metre limit for volume of fish tanks. Skipskompetanse AS was established the same year and the company continues to distinguish itself by its careful co-operation with the owners and operators of the vessels. It is particularly noted for its growing expertise in the ability to design all the special systems for life support of fish.

Special Requirements

The industry requires vessels capable of carrying farmed fish alive, at which time they are sorted and de-liced. This necessitates powerful live-support water treatment systems for the fish which involves circulation, water cleaning, oxygenating, disinfection, and automatic washing of tanks and piping. The systems have to be designed in such a way as to ensure low stress levels and a high degree of care for animal welfare in accordance with Norwegian animal welfare regulations.

The value of 3D

Due to these complex requirements, Skipskompetanse works with the owner to design vessels “inside-out” around the valuable cargo. To do that efficiently and effectively calls for a 3D software application such as ShipConstructor because a 3D realistic visualization makes it easier to understand where everything should go.

After implementing ShipConstructor, Per Jørgen Silden, the Managing Director of Skipskompetanse, and Borys Sukhanyk, a Marine Engineer have happily noted, “3D allows us to incorporate all systems in a much better way.”

Speed to proficiency

As for why he chose ShipConstructor itself, Borys simply said, “Training costs and ease of use.” ShipConstructor is built on a familiar AutoCAD foundation and Autodesk platform, enabling companies to have their staff members be more quickly and continually productive than any other shipbuilding CAD/CAM software on the market.

SSI is proud to be part of the company’s success.
