The Challenge
In 2012, as Genoa was set to play a crucial role in Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), they identified the need to expand and onboard in large numbers rapidly. With not many designers previously familiar with shipbuilding and a large number of projects ahead, it was going to be a challenge to ramp up quickly and ensure everyone was on equal footing. In order to keep focusing on the next project milestone, the new designers needed to have the right skills to excel. As it stands, many design offices have no well-defined training programs directly related to shipbuilding design challenges and intricacies. Something that could ensure everyone was working from the same level of expertise was needed.
Finding a way to improve this onboarding process, while simultaneously ensuring that work can continue on the projects at hand and be ready for future demand, was crucial for Genoa.
The Solution
To tackle this challenge, there was a great deal of collaboration between the Academy team members and Genoa’s internal technical subject matter experts to standardize existing curriculum in systems and structure modeling and develop a comprehensive onboarding program. A key consideration was that this program was capable of equipping a new team member with the right skills and confidence in their abilities – no matter their level of existing shipbuilding knowledge. The onboarding focuses on getting people comfortable with shipbuilding, Genoa’s Lisp routines, AutoCAD, and ShipConstructor.
Since Genoa completes most of its projects using SSI’s ShipConstructor, some of the onboarding material is pulled directly from SSI Learning resources. Particularly when targeted training is needed, Genoa will point a trainee to the appropriate SSI Learning or MyLearning module for extra training on a specific aspect of AutoCAD or ShipConstructor along with some practice exercises. As self-directed training, the SSI Learning platform is also available as a resource to those who need a bit more support.
Along with access to SSI Learning, everyone at Genoa is registered for and receives an introduction to Nexus, SSI’s community portal, as part of their onboarding. Through Nexus, the entire team at Genoa can take part in community discussions, get access to Knowledge Base articles, and participate in the Wish List
