Yong-Hae, Kim, President of Iaan Engineering, says that SSI’s ShipConstructor CAD/CAM software is ideal for teaching the concepts of shipbuilding and offshore design.
The basis for this conclusion is the success that his company has had in using ShipConstructor as part of a series of training courses that his company has taught at Pukyong National University in Busan Korea. Twenty students graduated from the most recent 60-hour course on April 18, 2016.
Removing Barriers to learning
The goal of the training is to teach students the fundamentals of ship and offshore design so that they can eventually gain employment in this field. The challenge with many software applications is that typically far too much time has to be spent teaching students how to learn the software itself, rather than in teaching the best ship building, design and modeling practices. ShipConstructor software removes that barrier.
“It is very important that CAD software is easy to learn and use,” says Kim. “This is so designers can focus on core design issues rather than how to use the CAD Software. ShipConstructor is very suitable for training and real world design because with ShipConstructor, it is very easy to teach how to design complicated ship and plant structures.”
Speed to Proficiency
SSI CEO Darren Larkins notes that Kim is actually highlighting some key concepts regarding ShipConstructor that lie at the foundation of how the software is developed.
“First of all,” he explains, “ShipConstructor leverages the power of Autodesk’s AutoCAD, the best and most popular CAD software in the world which helps make ShipConstructor the easiest to learn and use. Secondly, SSI puts enormous effort into ensuring that our software is optimized for ship and offshore construction.”
He goes on to elaborate exactly how SSI does this.
Shipbuilding specific
“All of ShipConstructor’s menu items use shipbuilding and marine construction terms. You create shipbuilding parts and most importantly, the software presents items to you in the context of a natural workflow that you would use to design a ship or offshore structure.”
