        • The most significant opportunities to impact the cost of building and operating a ship are found in the design and engineering phase.

If you have Google Alerts set up for Eastern shipbuilding (our client) or Hornbeck Offshore, you keep seeing launch after launch and delivery and delivery of various HOSMAX 310 Offshore Support Vessels. Take a look at the calendar off of Eastern Shipbuilding’s website:

Hornbeck Offshore
10 Offshore Supply Vessels

First (4) Vessels:
292′ x 64′ x 24′-6″
Subsequent (6) Vessels:
302′ x 64′ x 26′
Diesel Electric Powered, Z-Drive, DP2
Hull #201: HOS Red Dawn – Delivered 06/2013
Hull #202: HOS Red Rock – Delivered 10/2013
Hull #203: HOS Renaissance – Delivered 11/2013
Hull #204: HOS Riverbend – Delivered 02/2014
Hull #205: HOS Bayou – Launched
Hull #206: HOS Black Foot – Launched
Hull #207: HOS Black Rock
Hull #208: HOS Black Watch
Hull #209: HOS Brass Ring
Hull #210: HOS Briarwood

The point we’d like to draw attention to is that, reportedly, Eastern Shipbuilding keeps splashing and delivering these vessels, on-time, and on-budget.

We can’t claim credit for all of this success (even though these ships were detail designed using SSI’s ShipConstructor software).

But we do think it’s fair to note a couple of features that ShipConstructor has that encourage on-time delivery.

First of all, there are ShipConstructor’s unparalleled capabilities for detailing of assembly drawings which enable production staff to follow a “right the first time” principle in construction, thus avoiding costly and time-consuming rework. (Back in September, we issue a press release about another customer Mustang Marine who saw a 25% build time reduction).

Then, there’s the fact that ShipConstructor utilizes special “Associative DWG” technology which enables “true concurrent engineering”. No-one else has this technology. If you like to know more about this innovative technology, we have quite an interesting write-up on our ShipConstructor overview page that is worth looking at.
