Shipbuilding is becoming more global every year. The need to work with teams and contractors from across the country and the world is a fact of many modern projects. The impact of the covid-19 pandemic has only accelerated this reality. With SSI 2021 R2.1, we’ve introduced a new way for teams to work together and tackle that challenge, as well as easier ways for stakeholders to visualize projects, make design validation more painless than ever, and much more.

Join the SSI team on Feb 18th at 8 am PST for a webinar first look at all the improvements now available with the release of SSI 2021 R2.1.
Register NowThroughout 2020, we listened to feedback from our clients on what they need to work better across their remote teams. One of the key challenges that came up consistently across clients was the need for a better way to work on a common project with low latency, while also maintaining a single source of truth.
With the introduction of WorkShare Teams, real-time access to the same ShipConstructor project without the performance hit of other remote connections is possible. Post covid-19, remote teams aren’t going anywhere. Now every team can enjoy the comfort of on-site speeds, no matter where they are in the world.
No matter where a team is located, making sure that it’s easy to get actionable information from projects is key. Decision makers across shipbuilding have already embraced the power of visualizing projects in ShipExplorer and with SSI 2021 R2.1, we’ve increased the ways for stakeholders to visually see the answers to their questions. Along with performance improvements, ShipExplorer now includes additional search sets for clashes and compartments by default and is compatible with EnterprisePlatform Operations.
Also included in this release are new ways of streamlining validation, transitioning from functional design to detailed modeling, additional control over drawings, and more. A detailed list of the top changes is below, and to get a more in-depth look, be sure to join our development team at the release webinar on Feb 18th at 8 am PST.
Detailed Enhancements
Distributed Teams Solution
SSI now offers WorkShare Teams, an exciting additional solution to support distributed teams sharing ShipConstructor work on a common project from multiple locations. WorkShare Teams provides real-time access to a ShipConstructor project across multiple geo-locations.
Compared to remotely connecting to the project through a VPN or Remote Desktop, distributed teams will see greatly improved performance, including:
- Faster generation of Reports.
- Faster updating of BOMs.
- Faster updating of Production Drawings.
- Faster loading of XREFs.
- Reduced load on the project server.
WorkShare Teams is the latest member of the WorkShare product line and requires a WorkShare license.
ShipExplorer Enhancements
ShipExplorer Visualization Performance Improvements
In this release, SSI has achieved massive performance improvements for several popular ShipExplorer features that help you quickly visualize your project.
- Spotlight is now instantaneous.
- ‘Load Properties’ and ‘Apply’ colors in Color By Property is now more than 10x faster.
ShipExplorer Search Set Additions
Additional search sets for Clashes and Compartments have been added to the SSI default search sets. This will help users select Clashes and Compartments in their models easily, saving time and effort.
ShipExplorer compatibility with EnterprisePlatform Operations
ShipExplorer now supports command-line use for several key functions, enabling use with SSI EnterprisePlatform Operations:
- Product Hierarchy selection set (Create from Product Hierarchy).
- SSI extended properties (Import Properties).
- SSI default search sets (Create Search Sets).
- Task sets (Create from Tasks).
Seamless Transition From Functional Design to Detailed Modeling
Import and Populate PIL Assets from AutoCAD P&ID Drawings
SSI’s long-term goal is to enable users to seamlessly leverage any information from functional design when they are in the detail design.
In this release, we provide a functional workflow that:
- Allows a user to import assets directly from the P&ID project into the Project Item List.
- Enables the user to run P&ID DesignValidation against those imported Assets in the PIL.
Project Item List Pipe Enhancement
For SSI 2021 R2.1, more enhancements have been made to the Project Item List. The PIL now includes the ability for PIL Pipe Items to interact with drawing parts.
Validate Functional Design from Project Item List (PIL)
You can now use PIL based Design Validation to ensure the information on parts created in detailed design is consistent with functional design information in the PIL. (See more on PIL-Based Design Validation below.)
Streamlined Design Validation
PIL-Based Design Validation
SSI has greatly expanded ShipConstructor’s P&ID DesignValidation capabilities and streamlined workflows.
As of this latest release:
- Designers now have the option to select the Project Item List (PIL) as a P&ID reference within the P&ID DesignValidation wizard, in addition to the existing Plant 3D P&ID project option.
- There are standalone means of specifying filters for and exporting from the PIL.
- The standalone commands for exporting, setting filters and matching rules, and performing comparisons, all function with the PIL export.
- For PIL based compares, users can also filter PIL parts based on the Service and Line Number attributes of PIL items.
Together with the ability to import spreadsheet-based asset take-offs from non-Plant 3D P&ID drawings introduced in the last release, you can now enable a full workflow for functional design assets:
- Import functional design assets to the PIL.
- Progressively refine requirements in UDAs and assign stocks.
- Insert to the model directly from the PIL.
- Verify attribute consistency between the PIL and ShipConstructor 3D model.
- Manage change through updates to the PIL.
Locking Drawings Improvements
Drawing UDA Editor
Locked drawings now are prevented from having their assigned Drawing User Defined Attributes modified.
Drawing UDA Manager
Users with the ability to edit locks will be allowed to change UDA Assignments on locked drawings, but they will be notified of what the changes to those will be. Users without permission to edit locks will be prevented from modifying assignments to locked drawings.
Installer Enhancements
License Server Upgrades
In this release, we have upgraded the SSI License server to the latest version available from RLM.
ShipCAM
In this release, we have added the ability to load plate stock XML in ShipCAM allowing users to take advantage of ShipCAM functionalities regardless of their ShipConstructor version:
- ShipCAM can now be installed separately,
- An active subscription on Hull is required to use ShipCAM.
Note that the SSI 2021 R2.1 installer will be the last one with ShipCAM as an option for installation.
Awesome Technical Support
Get faster Technical Support solutions by using the SSI Desktop App:
- Automatically attaches SSI products and system information when creating support requests.
- Eliminates the frequent back-and-forth requests for more details,.
- Helps investigations start and end sooner.
The SSI Desktop App is now available as a standalone installer, available from SSI Nexus Downloads under Utilities. The App is compatible with any SSI version and, once installed, the SSI Desktop App can be set to automatically update itself.
